Publicity Mastermind Weekend

After months of preparation, I just had my much-anticipated Publicity Mastermind weekend retreat.

My Publicity Mastermind is for visionary entrepreneurs, experts, and authors looking to make it big — both online and in the mainstream. Connecting with influencers face-to-face and developing meaningful, personal relationships is the fastest way to get the opportunities of the lifetime.

How I Overcame my Fear of Public Speaking

Last month at the World Domination Summit, I was listening to Danielle LaPorte as she rocked the stage. During the audience Q&A someone asked her: “How do you become a great public speaker?”

Her answer: “You have to train for it like it’s an Olympic sport.”

Those words hit me hard. Because isn’t it true? If you want to be world-class at anything, there’s only one way — you have to give it everything you’ve got.

As an example, when I started preparing for my recent webinar, “How to Get VIP Access to Media + Influencers”, I trained for it like it was the Olympics.

You see, for most of my life, public speaking has completely terrified me.

I’m a natural introvert; I spend a lot of time in my head. When I do talk, I talk really fast. My shy tendencies and self-conscious nature created challenges for me.

microphoneI remember one time in high school history class, I had to give a presentation. I was so nervous that my legs were shaking convulsively the entire time I was speaking.

I tried to spill out my words as quickly as possible, but every moment felt like eternity. I could feel the silence in the room. The whole time, I could tell that my teacher and my classmates were feeling sorry for me.

This fear of public speaking continued for most of my adult life. I remember at my first job, I sometimes had to give presentations to my boss and colleagues. The night before, I would toss and turn, worrying about the next day. When I would wake up in the morning, I’d feel like throwing up.

There was no way I was just going to “wing it” and hope for a successful webinar. So over the course of several weeks, I took extreme measures to prepare.

This included:

  • Hiring a consultant to figure out my core messaging and develop story ideas
  • Spending 8 hours per week with my copyeditor writing and rewriting the presentation
  • Rehearsing it in my living room for my interns. They critiqued my delivery. They told me what parts of my talk were interesting (and what was not).
  • On the day of the webinar, I spent 5 hours rehearsing and refining my presentation.

Overall, I spent about 60 hours “training” for this 1-hour webinar. I realized afterwards that I followed the advice I’d once heard about public speaking — spend 1 hour preparing for every 1 minute you are speaking.

The result of all this work?

Close to 700 people (hailing from New York City to a small Mayan village in Guatemala) signed up to hear me speak.

And… I nailed it. I loved every single moment of it.

Now here’s what I want you to take away from all of this:

Success is not an accident.

The success of my presentation didn’t just magically happen for me. It was a direct result of the countless hours I poured into crafting my content, rehearsing my talk, and strategizing the promotion.

How YOU Can Get the Media’s Attention

What does it take to get seen & be known by more than just a handful of clients or friends? 

How do you get the media interested in YOU? So you get the write-ups in magazines & high profile blogs, and the interviews on tv, podcasts, youtube shows, and more?

Let me explain with a story…

Imagine The New York Times is a really hot girl.

This blond bombshell gets hit on left & right whenever she walks into a bar. Swarms of guys (who she barely knows anything about) are constantly testing their latest pick-up line on her and competing for her attention.

99% of these people go ignored. She doesn’t have time for them, nor does she care about them.

But make no mistake, she IS looking. She is eagerly hoping that she’ll meet someone really special. She wants to go on dates. She wants a long-term relationship, but only with the right person.

Then her friend tells her, “There’s this guy you’ve GOT to meet. He’s amazing, unique, and I think you’ll really like him.” Her ears perk up, and she gets that fluttering, excited feeling in her body.

Similarly, the media is eagerly hoping to meet experts like you. Every day, they are searching for experts who have the answers to questions their audience is most struggling with. They want to find those people who can solve the problems of the masses.

The problem is that they’re used to thousands of mediocre pitches from strangers who waste their time. So they’re jaded, and it takes time to build trust.

So what will lead them to say, “Sure, let’s set up a meeting”?

The secret is getting an endorsement from a trusted person in their network who says, “Hey, you need to check this person out.” This is one of the fastest ways to stand out.

But when it comes to getting noticed by the media, the most important steps often come after that one-time meeting or introduction.


Building a thoughtful, consistent relationship with the media (or anyone in the position to give you amazing opportunities) is the only way that one-time meeting will grow into opportunities that translate into real results for your business.

However, most people have no idea how to build powerful, long-lasting connections with the media and influencers. In fact,  most people are doing it all wrong.

And this is something I am an expert at doing.

For more than a decade, I’ve been building relationships with powerful players of the editorial world and blogosphere. This is why today, I can call many of them up and recommend the next big star to them, or get their personal feedback on my latest big project.  A few questions for you —

What’s Your Money Story??

Growing up, did you ever hear the saying “Money doesn’t grow on trees” or “Money is the root of all evil”?

Most of us have conflicting feelings about money. We want more of it, yet over the years we’ve been programmed to think it’s bad.

As an entrepreneur, it’s especially important to have healthy thoughts about money. For example, if you feel guilty about charging high prices for your services, you end up getting clients who aren’t willing to pay what you’re worth. No fun, right?

Changing your conflicting thoughts about money requires you figure out your old “money story.” Last weekend, I went to a conference called Money 2.0 in Atlanta, where we spent a whole day figuring out our old money stories — and creating new, more empowering ones.

Let me share my old money story with you:

One of my first jobs out of college was at a nonprofit, where I worked extremely long hours but was making very little money. Without realizing it, I equated helping people with making no money. Making money and helping people felt at odds with each other.

Because of my old money story, I felt conflicted about how much to charge my clients when I first started my business. While I would give my all to my clients, I would feel guilty charging them premium prices for my services. Over time, however, I’ve realized that in order to have a healthy business and healthy client relationships, it’s important that my prices reflect the true value of my work.

So now, my new money story is: The more my clients invest in themselves and in me, the bigger impact we make in the world.

I believe in this so strongly, and as a result, today I have a thriving business that I love.

What has also really helped is surrounding myself with successful entrepreneurs who have a healthy relationship with money.

For instance, my friend Kavita J. Patel is a relationship expert who has helped hundreds of women find love that lasts.

People rave about her work, and she’s coached top executives from places like Google and Amazon.

This year, Kavita has already crossed the multiple six-figure mark in her business, and it’s only June! I’m so proud of her. She’s the perfect example of someone who makes a great living, while making a huge difference in people’s lives.

So now I have two questions for you:

  • Do you have a healthy relationship with money?
  • If not, what is a more empowering way of thinking about money?

Finding Your Dream Job

Dear Friend,

If you’re like me, doing work you love isn’t just a luxury, it’s a necessity.

About three years ago, I left my job at a nonprofit to go to business school at NYU Stern. I was in a class of 400 people from all over the world. By choosing to get an MBA, each of us had committed two years of our time (and over $100,000) in pursuit of a better career and a better life.

While all of my classmates were smart and ambitious, I always felt out of place. Most people wanted to be an investment banker or a consultant. A handful wanted to work in marketing at a big company like L’Oreal or Kraft.

While on the outside these options seemed quite glamorous, none of them felt right to me.

I remember going to a job recruitment event, hosted by a prestigious consulting firm. At that point in the year, dozens of companies had held these events, and I figured that I might as well go to at least one of them.

Dressed in stiff, formal business attire and being surrounded by a sea of black business suits, I remember saying to myself, “What am I doing here?!” I was bored out of my mind. Getting one of these “prestigious” jobs would have been like prison to me.

Over time I realized that it didn’t matter what the job was. The ONLY way for me to be happy was to be my own boss and create my dream job. Today I feel blessed to say that this is the life I live. I have the privilege of working with the most amazing entrepreneurs and helping them grow their businesses.

Because I am so passionate about this topic, I’m excited to be speaking on a panel called Accessing Your Dream Career.
