Publicity Mastermind Weekend

Posted on by Selena Soo, in 'Event Alert!, Money/Career'

After months of preparation, I just had my much-anticipated Publicity Mastermind weekend retreat.

My Publicity Mastermind is for visionary entrepreneurs, experts, and authors looking to make it big — both online and in the mainstream. Through our work together, my clients are making powerful connections with influencers + the media, expanding their audience and platform, and creating a solid plan to generate more revenue in their business.

A few highlights from the weekend —

Guest speaker Devin Tomb (lifestyle editor at Self;  formerly of Glamour and Seventeen) joined us at the Mastermind retreat and revealed the secrets to capturing the attention of mainstream media. She also offered each of my clients personalized feedback on their own branding & messaging, giving them an inside edge to score major press coverage.

On Saturday night, my Masterminders showed up at a trendy Manhattan restaurant for our VIP dinner party — ready to shine, speak in front of the room, and share their message with close to 50 influencers & media from places like Huffington Post, Redbook, Fitness, Shape, Women’s Health, Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, and DailyCandy. They also chatted with top literary agents + successful bloggers who run multimillion-dollar businesses.

Connecting with influencers face-to-face and developing meaningful, personal relationships is the fastest way to get the opportunities of the lifetime.

6-figure book deals, A-list mentors, big speaking opportunities, and powerful media mentions … rarely do you get these opportunities based on hard work alone. Knowing the right people (and getting them to care about you) is a key step to making this a potential reality for you.

Image

It was a magical weekend. The culmination of my 10 years of building powerful relationships, which I can now share with my clients — allowing them to reach more people + make a bigger difference in the world.

If you’d like to learn a bit more about my Mastermind clients, I have two blog posts to share. The first is from Julie Stubblefield (lean fitness + business expert) who shares her top 3 tips for connecting with influencers. The second is from Jennifer Racioppi (women’s health + success coach) who talks about overcoming her introversion, being courageous, and showing up in the world in a much bigger way.

I’m so proud of my clients for playing big, investing in their dreams, and doing the work they were put on the planet to do. I look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months!

Warmly,

Question for you today —

Have you noticed how certain coaches and experts have skyrocketed in their careers, gotten amazing press, and become industry darlings?

They’re admired, respected, and highly sought after. People line up and pay big money just to get a small piece of them in their online products or programs. They’re getting the big tv opportunities, the magazine spreads,
and the 6-figure book deals.

They seem to be part of an elite club that no one else knows how to get into. How did they get in?

Hard work and talent, yes. But that will only get you so far.

It’s about knowing the right people — who can give you access to those
once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, waiting behind closed doors.

MMPAGE

For example, by knowing the right people, I was able to help coach Ali Leipzig get a 4-page feature in Lucky Magazine and a spot on the Today Show just six months after starting her business.

It’s through knowing how to meaningfully connect with influential people that had my friend Derek Halpern saying, “She’s a master at building powerful relationships the right way. If you’re looking to grow your network, I’d pay close attention to what Selena has to say.”

It’s through knowing how to build long-term relationships with VIPs that I was invited to write a guest post for my friend Ramit Sethi, where he introduced me to his email list of 215,000 people, telling them to check out my work.

These are opportunities you can’t pay for. You can only get them if you are in the club.

I am sharing this with you today because there are 4 spots left in the Publicity Mastermind. Is one of them yours?

You don’t have to have a six-figure business or “have it all together” to be a candidate for the Mastermind. I’m looking for individuals who have star power, potential, and incredible drive. If this is you, then let’s explore working together.

Once these 4 spots are filled, the Mastermind is closed. If you are considering it, learn more and apply for my Mastermind here.

Warmly,

P.S. In just a few weeks, I am bringing together an incredible lineup of influential bloggers, experts, and magazine editors for my private VIP Mastermind dinner party, where I’ll be showcasing the amazing individuals in my mastermind.

You’ll have the rare chance to connect face-to-face with some of the biggest power players in the industry. If you want a place at the table, apply for the Publicity Mastermind here.

I was recently interviewed by my friend Liz Dennery Sanders. Liz is a branding visionary and one of the Vogue 100, a group of powerful influencers that Vogue Magazine recognized for their leadership in culture and style.

Liz created SheBrand to help women entrepreneurs create dynamic personal brands, so they can expand their businesses and their reach.

To inspire women to dream bigger, each week SheBrand showcases a different woman entrepreneur that is making a big impact with her business and through her brand. I am honored & excited to be featured in the Superstar series, alongside inspirational women entrepreneurs, fashion designers, and celebrities. I had a lot of fun answering her interview questions. We chatted about favorite things (like indulgences, hangouts, and restaurants), my #1 tip for entrepreneurs, and why branding is so important.

How I Overcame my Fear of Public Speaking

Posted on by Selena Soo, in 'Empowerment, Money/Career'

Last month at the World Domination Summit, I was listening to Danielle LaPorte as she rocked the stage. During the audience Q&A someone asked her: “How do you become a great public speaker?”

Her answer: “You have to train for it like it’s an Olympic sport.”

Those words hit me hard. Because isn’t it true? If you want to be world-class at anything, there’s only one way — you have to give it everything you’ve got.

As an example, when I started preparing for my recent webinar, “How to Get VIP Access to Media + Influencers”, I trained for it like it was the Olympics.

You see, for most of my life, public speaking has completely terrified me.

I’m a natural introvert; I spend a lot of time in my head. When I do talk, I talk really fast. My shy tendencies and self-conscious nature created challenges for me.

microphoneI remember one time in high school history class, I had to give a presentation. I was so nervous that my legs were shaking convulsively the entire time I was speaking.

I tried to spill out my words as quickly as possible, but every moment felt like eternity. I could feel the silence in the room. The whole time, I could tell that my teacher and my classmates were feeling sorry for me.

This fear of public speaking continued for most of my adult life. I remember at my first job, I sometimes had to give presentations to my boss and colleagues. The night before, I would toss and turn, worrying about the next day. When I would wake up in the morning, I’d feel like throwing up.

There was no way I was just going to “wing it” and hope for a successful webinar. So over the course of several weeks, I took extreme measures to prepare.

This included:

  • Hiring a consultant to figure out my core messaging and develop story ideas
  • Spending 8 hours per week with my copyeditor writing and rewriting the presentation
  • Rehearsing it in my living room for my interns. They critiqued my delivery. They told me what parts of my talk were interesting (and what was not).
  • On the day of the webinar, I spent 5 hours rehearsing and refining my presentation.

Overall, I spent about 60 hours “training” for this 1-hour webinar. I realized afterwards that I followed the advice I’d once heard about public speaking — spend 1 hour preparing for every 1 minute you are speaking.

The result of all this work?

Close to 700 people (hailing from New York City to a small Mayan village in Guatemala) signed up to hear me speak.

And… I nailed it. I loved every single moment of it.

Now here’s what I want you to take away from all of this:

Success is not an accident.

The success of my presentation didn’t just magically happen for me. It was a direct result of the countless hours I poured into crafting my content, rehearsing my talk, and strategizing the promotion.

So today, I want to ask you: Where in your business are you just hoping success will magically happen? Are there actions you could take that would make your success inevitable?

Share your answers directly below. By making a public commitment, you’re taking a powerful step towards that goal.

I look forward to hearing from you & reading your comments!

How YOU Can Get the Media’s Attention

Posted on by Selena Soo, in 'Event Alert!, Money/Career'

What does it take to get seen & be known by more than just a handful of clients or friends?

How do you get the media interested in YOU? So you get the write-ups in magazines & high profile blogs, and the interviews on tv, podcasts, youtube shows, and more?

Let me explain with a story…

Imagine The New York Times is a really hot girl.

This blond bombshell gets hit on left & right whenever she walks into a bar. Swarms of guys (who she barely knows anything about) are constantly testing their latest pick-up line on her and competing for her attention.

99% of these people go ignored. She doesn’t have time for them, nor does she care about them.

But make no mistake, she IS looking. She is eagerly hoping that she’ll meet someone really special. She wants to go on dates. She wants a long-term relationship, but only with the right person.

Then her friend tells her, “There’s this guy you’ve GOT to meet. He’s amazing, unique, and I think you’ll really like him.” Her ears perk up, and she gets that fluttering, excited feeling in her body.

Similarly, the media is eagerly hoping to meet experts like you. Every day, they are searching for experts who have the answers to questions their audience is most struggling with. They want to find those people who can solve the problems of the masses.

The problem is that they’re used to thousands of mediocre pitches from strangers who waste their time. So they’re jaded, and it takes time to build trust.

So what will lead them to say, “Sure, let’s set up a meeting”?

The secret is getting an endorsement from a trusted person in their network who says, “Hey, you need to check this person out.” This is one of the fastest ways to stand out.

But when it comes to getting noticed by the media, the most important steps often come after that one-time meeting or introduction.

Image

Building a thoughtful, consistent relationship with the media (or anyone in the position to give you amazing opportunities) is the only way that one-time meeting will grow into opportunities that translate into real results for your business.

However, most people have no idea how to build powerful, long-lasting connections with the media and influencers. In fact,  most people are doing it all wrong.

And this is something I am an expert at doing.

For more than a decade, I’ve been building relationships with powerful players of the editorial world and blogosphere. This is why today, I can call many of them up and recommend the next big star to them, or get their personal feedback on my latest big project.  A few questions for you —

  • What if you could get in front of these decision makers? These hard-to-access people waiting behind closed doors, who can give you a bigger platform and fast forward your success?
  • How many more people could you reach?
  • How much more revenue could you potentially bring in?

In the  Publicity Mastermind Circle, I will be teaching these relationship-building and publicity skills to a small group of future stars, so that these opportunities can become yours.

This 6-month mastermind program is a completely unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You’ll have the rare chance to meet many of the most valuable people in my network, which I have carefully cultivated over the course of 10+ years. At the same time, you’ll be receiving mentoring from me so you cultivate these relationships the right way.

This is how you will stand out from the crowd, and get the opportunities to make an even bigger impact — and have an even bigger presence — in the world.

So what I want to know is this — are YOU that future star that the world needs to know about?  If you’re ready to be seen as a power player in your industry + get the support to make that happen, I invite you to apply for the Publicity Mastermind Circle TODAY.

Warmly,

P.S. Thank you so much to those of you who have already applied! And thank you also to those who have shared my last blog with that special star in your network.

Is there a person in your life whose work needs to be seen & known by the masses? If so, I would love for you to send this link over to them, so they have a chance to apply for the Publicity Mastermind Circle today.

I’m looking for the next big star (is it you?)

Hi Selena,

You are unique, special, and truly amazing at what you do. You know how to get life-changing results for your clients, and how make a good living from your business.

You’ve accomplished many of the goals you first set out to achieve.

And yet… something is missing.

While your clients think the world of you, the rest of the world doesn’t really know who you are.

And because you aren’t widely recognized as an industry leader, you are ultimately limited in achieving the even bigger goals you have, like:

  • Deeply impacting the lives of millions (rather than just a few hundred)
  • Getting a 6-figure book deal or landing on the NY Times best-sellers list
  • Moving from a 1:1 coaching business model to building a global empire

A handful of individuals have figured out how to dominate the personal growth industry, and are moving into the mainstream. They’re the ones getting featured in magazines (or getting cover stories!). Their books are the NY Times best-sellers. They’re getting the big stages and huge audiences.

And it’s so frustrating because you know you have just as much to offer as those who are dominating the spotlight. Your work has the potential to help thousands — or millions — of people too.

So how do you go from where you currently are to…

  • Building an exponentially bigger email list (perhaps 2x, 3x, or even 10x bigger) with devoted supporters, fans, and customers?
  • Getting interviewed by Oprah on Super Soul Sunday?
  • Speaking onstage with thousands of people in the audience hanging on your every word?

To get these kind of opportunities, you need the right people behind you – who can open up doors for you + give you a bigger platform.

I can show exactly how to build and cultivate these relationships so YOU start getting the opportunities that set you up as the next big thought leader.

Introducing The Publicity Mastermind Circle

A unique 6-month opportunity for 10 to 12 stars on the rise.

I’ll be teaching you exactly how to position yourself as a leader, increase your visibility, and build powerful relationships with the media and other influencers.

If you think you have what it takes to become recognized in the mainstream, then I would love for you to apply today.

Learn about the Publicity Mastermind Circle here.

I am accepting applicants on a first-come, first served basis, so apply early!

What’s Your Money Story??

Posted on by Selena Soo, in 'Money/Career, Productivity'

Growing up, did you ever hear the saying “Money doesn’t grow on trees” or “Money is the root of all evil”?

Most of us have conflicting feelings about money. We want more of it, yet over the years we’ve been programmed to think it’s bad.

As an entrepreneur, it’s especially important to have healthy thoughts about money. For example, if you feel guilty about charging high prices for your services, you end up getting clients who aren’t willing to pay what you’re worth. No fun, right?

Changing your conflicting thoughts about money requires you figure out your old “money story.” Last weekend, I went to a conference called Money 2.0 in Atlanta, where we spent a whole day figuring out our old money stories — and creating new, more empowering ones.

Let me share my old money story with you:

One of my first jobs out of college was at a nonprofit, where I worked extremely long hours but was making very little money. Without realizing it, I equated helping people with making no money. Making money and helping people felt at odds with each other.

Because of my old money story, I felt conflicted about how much to charge my clients when I first started my business. While I would give my all to my clients, I would feel guilty charging them premium prices for my services. Over time, however, I’ve realized that in order to have a healthy business and healthy client relationships, it’s important that my prices reflect the true value of my work.

So now, my new money story is: The more my clients invest in themselves and in me, the bigger impact we make in the world.

I believe in this so strongly, and as a result, today I have a thriving business that I love.

What has also really helped is surrounding myself with successful entrepreneurs who have a healthy relationship with money.

For instance, my friend Kavita J. Patel is a relationship expert who has helped hundreds of women find love that lasts.

People rave about her work, and she’s coached top executives from places like Google and Amazon.

This year, Kavita has already crossed the multiple six-figure mark in her business, and it’s only June! I’m so proud of her. She’s the perfect example of someone who makes a great living, while making a huge difference in people’s lives.

So now I have two questions for you:

  • Do you have a healthy relationship with money?
  • If not, what is a more empowering way of thinking about money?

If you need some inspiration, here are a few positive money stories I heard at the conference:

  • My services can and will change lives – they are worth every dollar.
  • My self worth grows with my net worth
  • Making money is a fun adventure!

Is this helpful? I would love to know if this message resonated, and I would love to hear any thoughts you have about your relationship with money.

Warmly,

Finding Your Dream Job

Dear Friend,

If you’re like me, doing work you love isn’t just a luxury, it’s a necessity.

About three years ago, I left my job at a nonprofit to go to business school at NYU Stern. I was in a class of 400 people from all over the world. By choosing to get an MBA, each of us had committed two years of our time (and over $100,000) in pursuit of a better career and a better life.

While all of my classmates were smart and ambitious, I always felt out of place. Most people wanted to be an investment banker or a consultant. A handful wanted to work in marketing at a big company like L’Oreal or Kraft.

While on the outside these options seemed quite glamorous, none of them felt right to me.

I remember going to a job recruitment event, hosted by a prestigious consulting firm. At that point in the year, dozens of companies had held these events, and I figured that I might as well go to at least one of them.

Dressed in stiff, formal business attire and being surrounded by a sea of black business suits, I remember saying to myself, “What am I doing here?!” I was bored out of my mind. Getting one of these “prestigious” jobs would have been like prison to me.

Over time I realized that it didn’t matter what the job was. The ONLY way for me to be happy was to be my own boss and create my dream job. Today I feel blessed to say that this is the life I live. I have the privilege of working with the most amazing entrepreneurs and helping them grow their businesses.

Because I am so passionate about this topic, I’m excited to be speaking on a panel called Accessing Your Dream Career.

It’s on Tuesday, May 14th at 7pm. If you’re in NYC, I’d love for you to join us.

A bit about the other speakers:

NITIKA CHOPRA (the host)

  • My friend Nitika is the founder of Your Bella Life, an online magazine for women looking to live their best lives. Earlier this year, she also got her own TV show, which will air this summer!
RACHEL GOLDSTEIN
  • Rachel is the behind-the-scenes genius responsible for producing some of the hottest events. Her clients include companies such as Lululemon and LYFE Kitchen to individuals like Marie Forleo, Kris Carr, and Dr. Mark Hyman.
MELISSE GELULA
  • Melisse is the co-founder of Well+Good, a leading online magazine and newsletter dedicated to the fitness and wellness scene in NYC. Previously, Melisse was the editor-in-chief of SpaFinderLifestyle.com and the spa beauty editor at Luxury SpaFinder Magazine. This required her to travel to 100-plus spas on five continents, which sounds like a dream job to me!
MICHELLE GOLDBLUM
  • Michelle is the co-founder of IAM. creative, a full-service marketing agency specializing in web design and brand development. Michelle and her team have designed some of the most drop-dead gorgeous websites I have seen for brands in the personal development & wellness space. If you’re thinking of getting a new website (or revamping your existing one), I suggest checking her company out!

Every entrepreneur will agree that starting a business is hard work, but here’s the good news: there are short-cuts to success.

It’s a myth that you need to struggle for years & years before your business takes off. The truth is, if you focus on the right things, you can start making pretty good money right away.

Now you might be asking, “Selena, how do I do that?”

My answer? Learn from the super successful.

Learn from the people who are experts in their field. The people who were once in your shoes, but have since figured out how to build a thriving, sustainable business.

For those of you interested in learning more, I encourage you to check out a special online event my friend Jordana Jaffe has created. It’s called “The New Entrepreneur’s Business Blueprint.”

If you sign up here, you’ll get access to exclusive interviews that will teach you how to generate consistent cash flow, make a big impact, and keep the faith during your first two years of business.

There is also a special interview with me about networking. I share some of my biggest secrets on how to develop relationships with influencers to get more clients and position yourself as a leader in your field.

I think you’ll really love this, so don’t forget to sign upAlso, stay tuned for an email later this week about my upcoming intern workshop!
